Hydrogen Americas Summit: Progress at the Speed of Trust.
In closing remarks at a session of the Hydrogen Americas Summit in Washington, DC, moderator Janice Lin expressed a critical message that has become a common refrain in a rapidly growing clean hydrogen ecosystem: the need for collaboration. Industry leaders like Lin recognize that for green hydrogen to reach its potential a heightened level of collaboration amongst all stakeholders is required. “Collaboration requires trust. Competitors must take a broader view and work together to support the bold innovators developing breakthrough technologies. Progress will occur at the speed of trust” said Lin who is CEO and Founder and President of the Green Hydrogen Coalition a nonprofit organization involved in education, coalition building, and market development.

This same sentiment was expressed at the prior evening reception. Speaker Mike Ducker of Mitsubishi Power stated “The industry is at a unique inflection point with tremendous attention and interest being paid to hydrogen as a solution. We must manage this opportunity intelligently. Thoughtful people must come to the table to focus on what can work. Citizens worldwide depend on smart policies and smart people to find solutions to providing clean energy. If we don’t succeed all of civilization will pay a terrible price.”

The June 11 and 12 at the Ronald Reagan International Center in Washington DC. featured two days and over 100 speakers and experts from the most significant corporations and organizations in the Hydrogen space. And numerous new and emerging companies some with breakthroughs in hydrogen presented. The rapidly growing hydrogen industry, which according to industry expert Michael Holman, PhD of Lux Research is consuming 80 to 85% of intellectual resources along with carbon capture and storage.

A contingent of 10 companies organized by Innovate UK did 5-minute speed presentations seeking. Impressive technologies with great promise. Examples include technology Zero emission CO2 producing clean hydrogen and solid carbon black at a fraction of the cost of water and electricity needed for electrolysis. Another described a means to take biogenic material of any sort under high pressure to generate clear hydrogen while removing carbon from the atmosphere.

An American start-up exhibited a technology that generates hydrogen from water exposed to sunlight. Imagine a small think fish tank with a catalyst. When light hits water it emits hydrogen. Requiring less space than solar panels their hope is that this could become as common as solar panels in homes worldwide.

All three companies bring hydrogen close to the use and each has visions of driving the price to near $1 per kilogram which would be a game changer and the critical challenge facing the industry. Innovations such as these offer hope, but the challenge is access to the resources needed to develop to their full potential and the connections to scale fast enough to make an impact on the overall climate.

“There were some very interesting technologies with great promise that were in attendance-we look forward to following their progress.” Patrick Maher GE Vernova.
Meeting face-to-face to build trust and advance toward a clean energy future. Conferences such as this play a critical role in fostering trust. SEC's next event is the Asia Pacific Summit 2024 September 12 – 13th 2024 in Brisbane Australia.
